Government routine monitoring programmes do not extend to private boreholes, where the onus is on each individual to ensure his/her borehole is analysed. A number of borehole owners have been astonished by laboratory results, especially when harmful bacteria are detected in their supposedly “clean” water.

ImageHow do these bacteria get into the water supply? One reason could be a damaged pipe.
Why are bacteria present if there are no humans in the vicinity? All mammal faeces contain bacteria.

Custom-built drying oven used for the drying of float materialACT-UIS has signed another major contract, this time for the determination of the Limit of Oxidised Coal (LOX) which is being investigated during an extensive chip drilling programme for coal in north-western Mozambique by one of the biggest mining companies in the world. As the drilling project requires fast turn-around times in order to make geological decisions for an effective drilling programme, the laboratory, together with the client, has designed a time-efficient sink/float process followed by the determination of the swelling index of coal.

When considering the safety of drinking water the presence of bacteria is of immense concern. Pathogenic organisms may cause illnesses, intestinal infections, dysentery, typhoid fever, cholera and even death, especially amongst the elderly, immune-depressed and young children.

E-ColiHuman and animal waste matter is a primary source of bacteria in water. This supply of bacterial contamination emanates from the run-off of pastures, dog routes or other land areas where such bodily waste is deposited. Other factors are seepage or discharge from septic tanks and sewage plants as well as normal soil/plant decay bacteria.

Sample PreparationACT-UIS has signed a major contract for sample preparation and analysis of geological exploration samples with one of the leading mining companies in the world. With this contract our client has achieved a convenient way of reducing the size of samples collected in the field before being shipped to other laboratories, which traditionally was very costly, resulted in delays at border posts and therefore long turn-around times.

The contract involves the primary sample preparation of several 10000 exploration samples from Cabo Delgado Province in Northern Mozambique at our laboratory in Tete over the next one and a half years and the chemical analysis for a wide spectrum of elements as quality control for another laboratory contracted for the analysis of the exploration samples.
